Selectivity improvement and extractive removal by various pretreatment methods prior to oxygen delignification for Acacia mangium and mixed hardwood kraft pulps

ثبت نشده
چکیده

The objective of this study was to evaluate different pretreatment methods prior to oxygen delignification on extractives removal and O-delignification selectivity. Four different pretreatment methods were used including ultrasonic treatment, hot water soaking, soda addition-preheating, and applying a high-shear mechanical pretretament. Acacia mangium and mixed hardwood (MHW) kraft pulps were used in this study. Mechanical pretreatment, prior to oxygen delignification, promoted a better selectivity for both Acacia mangium and MHW pulps. MHW kraft pulp did not show a significant extractive removal in all pretreatment methods during oxygen delignification. This was probably due to a low extractive content of pre O2 MHW kraft pulp to begin with. A dramatic extractive removal occurred on the Acacia mangium pulp that was pretreated with ultrasonic. The ultrasonic pretreatment followed by filtering induced extractive removal.

Influence of Xylan Content on the Oxygen Delignification Performance of Eucalypt Kraft Pulps as Studied Using Prehydrolysis and Xylanase Treatments

Common metrics for evaluating the efficiency of oxygen delignification include the kappa number and Klason lignin content. As a change in xylan content often leads to a change in HexA content, the kappa number must be corrected for the HexA contribution before evaluating the degree of oxygen delignification when trying to understand the process in detail. Questions could also be raised about th...

Effect of Hardwoods Characteristics on Kraft Pulping Process: Emphasis on Lignin Structure

In an attempt to explain variations in delignification behaviors among different hardwood species, the kraft pulping delignification rates of Eucalyptus urograndis, E. nitens, E. globulus, sweet gum, maple, red oak, birch, red alder, cottonwood, and acacia were obtained and correlated with their respective lignin chemical structures. Since H-factor for hardwood is calculated based on the softwo...

Delignification of Sugarcane Bagasse with Alkali and Peracetic Acid and Characterization of the Pulp

Sugarcane bagasse was delignified with alkali and peracetic acid in a two-stage process to obtain pulps with high yield and low kappa number. The experimental results indicated that alkali pretreatment prior to peracetic acid (PAA) delignification could significantly reduce PAA loading by partially removing lignin and swelling the fibers. An optimum condition for the two-stage delignification w...

Effect of Hydroxyl Radical on the Selectivity of Delignification during Oxygen Delignification of Bamboo Pulp

The main challenge in the oxygen delignification process is the improvement of selectivity. To further understand the effect of the amount of hydroxyl radicals on the selectivity of oxygen delignification, in this work, the hydroxyl radicals were generated by the improved Fenton reaction system and were quantified by UV spectrophotometry. Antioxidants such as ascorbic acid were applied for the ...

Comparative Study of Lipophilic Extractives of Hardwoods and Corresponding Ecf Bleached Kraft Pulps

The lipophilic extractives of Eucalyptus globulus, Eucalyptus grandis, Eucalyptus urograndis, Betula verrucosa and Acacia mangium woods and of the corresponding ECF bleached kraft pulps, were characterized by GC-MS. The five hardwoods showed significant differences in the content and composition of the main families of extractives, namely fatty acids, long chain aliphatic alcohols and sterols. ...
